Linguistics Courses
Due to COVID-19, we postponed many of our scheduled training dates as we were not able to offer face to face training sessions; we are currently working on re-scheduling these sessions. However due to the continued uncertainty and possible restrictions concerning CV-19, we will continue to do our utmost to deliver these courses in the best and safest way and this may mean offering an online alternative if courses cannot run. All details / changes will be posted on our website as courses are confirmed.
BSL Linguistics
Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th October 2021. (Participants need to attend all three sessions).

Tessa Padden and Sarah Lawrence in BSL
Tessa Padden, MA is a qualified Deaf Interpreter and Translator as well as a BSL Teacher trainer and an experienced teacher of BSL and Linguistics at University level. She will be supported by Sarah Lawrence who is herself an experienced teacher and mentor of teachers in Wales.
We are delighted to be able to offer this popular course again, which due to recent restrictions has been adapted for online learning. It will consist of 3 workshops, which totals 15 hours of learning over three days.
The course will include aspects such as:
- The Conditional Clause
- BSL Semantics
- Simultaneous Signs
- Syntactic Space
- Tenses/Time Markers
- Non-Manual Features (NMF)
- Negation
- Morphology
- Verb Classes
- Classifiers
The sessions will consist of presentations, group work, video clips and handouts.
Participants will also be expected to study independently between sessions, homework exercises will be provided for personal practise and development.
The course is ideal for those studying Level 4 and Level 6 British Sign Language and for Deaf people, professionals and teachers with an interest in the structure of BSL.
